I have used HP LaserJets for over twenty years. Each one has easily gone a decade or more before it needed replacement and continually print well up until they completely die. In fact my Laserjet 2200 from 14 years ago is still chugging away even after it was dropped and the reset button fell out of it.

This one is surprisingly capable for the price. It’s as fast as a printer I would have paid easily twice as much for in the past, has excellent print quality, and seamlessly configures itself for every electronic device I have in the house – tablet, phone, computer, or otherwise. It even supports Google Cloud Print for Chromebooks.

What’s nice is that it also has a manual feed which is something that’s not always found in low cost laser printers these days. I was able to print a small stack of 3×5 index cards using the feeder vs. loading them in the paper tray.

Toner included with the less expensive version of this printer is a lame intro cartridge – probably an attempt to hit the sub $200 pricetag. I’d suggest just going with the version with the full toner since the replacement will cost about $110. The cartridges are good for about 3,000 pages with just text and minimal coverage. Printing items with photos and graphics will reduce that number a bit but it’s still more economical page to page vs. an inkjet printer.

One important note is that this printer does not have Wifi built in – so you will need to connect it up to your network switch or router with an ethernet cable (not included). It can also connect directly to a PC with USB (cable also not included). The only way to use it with mobile devices like phones and tablets is to get it connected to the network. I do like how it will tell you the printer’s IP address on the main display without having to hunt for it. The printer has a small web server that is helpful for configuring it.

Those looking for duplexing (printing on both sides of the paper) will also need to look at a higher-end model. But all in this is a mid-range printer for a low-end price. I can definitely recommend it.

Glen Certato says:

can you check ink level on 402-416 hp?

saturnotaku says:

No duplex, no WiFi, no thanks.

Justin says:

Nope. Never buying an HP product again. If both of my HP computers started to have issues within 2 months, I can’t even imagine how long the printer will last

Cam Alliance says:

This printer is garbage in my opinion, especially for that premium price! It’s a ripoff and definitely not worth it!
I have a Brother HL-L2380DW (which does scanning, duplex & wifi and does all the protocols this HP does & more) and I only paid $119 CAD, which was on sale. The regular price is $129 USD on Amazon.com. I also purchase third-party toner from Amazon.ca, which costs $64.99 for a 3x Pack HIgh Yield Toner, and each toner prints about 2,600 pages.

As always, thanks for the honest review Lon… Cheers!

Colton Blumhagen says:

For the price I’m really surprised it doesn’t do duplex. A feature that’s really nice when printing out things like tax returns & other insanely long government forms.

Eric Brunhammer says:

One of the printers I still use in my house is the HP Laserjet 1320

IraQ Nid says:

I see you have not reviewed solid ink stick printers. Could you do some of those?

91MB Gt says:

Made in Philippine

91MB Gt says:

Hp is costumer of CANON. That printer is made by Canon or CBMP. CANON BUSINESS MACHINE (philippine) inc.

Dave Smith says:

I think since Epson launched there Ecotank line of colour printers the cost benefit has swung back to the inkjet printer. Here in the uk I can get 100ml of the four ink colours for £29 ($50 approx)

Blake.TV says:

We have one of these in our shop class computer room. Refuses to work with any of the computers except one and must be connected via CAT5…

I'm the father of God, and I'm disappointed in God and you gullible melon farmers says:

I’ve been using computers and social media for 30 years, and a Lexmark laser in the 90s in school as the Netware SysOp lab aide. I’ve seen all these damn sponsored reviews for HP lately, especially for the Pagewide inkjets at 55-70PPM. 99.9% of the reviews at Staples are from receiving a free printer. As a founder and CEO I can see what they’re doing. We use business credit with rewards for shopping at office supply stores and the first thing they’ll see is those damn reviews. I got the 252dw, and do not buy the marketing BS of print speeds.

IraQ Nid says:

I went to your website but it sent me right back here. Is it supposed to do that?

Bill Bradley says:

My last HP1200 lasted 5 years plus for 199.00. This printer, which I just got is great.

Tom Mendenhall says:

I rarely print documents now. Most of my documents are stored on local NAS and cloud.

DigitalYojimbo says:

Thought this review was 15 years old when I saw the thumbnail.

91MB Gt says:

The cartridges is………. Introductory or print cartridges?

Salvadore Pozzi says:

I gave up on HP printers a few years ago… The last 3 printers were completely unreliable. We went to Brother, both ink jet and laser and we have been completely satisfied ever since…

greenstaraz says:

OMG, The Cost ! ?.. Just get a Brother Printer for a happy home or office..
